MINING MANAGER – Open Pit
Main Purpose of the Job
The Mining Manager is responsible for designing, planning, and overseeing all mining activities to ensure safe, efficient, and cost-effective operations throughout the Life of Mine (LoM). This role will also lead technical services, manages mine planning and scheduling, reviews and approves deliverables, and ensures compliance with regulatory and contractual obligations. It also involves coordinating procurement, supervising contractors, and driving continuous improvement.
SUMMARY OF DUTIES
Mine design, planning, and scheduling
- Develop detailed mine layouts for open-pit operations.
- Optimize stope and pit designs using geotechnical and geological data.
- Prepare haulage plans for safe and efficient operations.
- Integrate mine design with production schedules and resource models.
- Validate designs against Life of Mine (LoM) objectives and budgets.
- Coordinate with survey teams for accurate implementation of designs.
- Review and update designs based on operational feedback and changing conditions.
Mine planning
- Develop short-, medium-, and long-term mine plans aligned with production targets.
- Prepare annual budgets and resource forecasts for mining operations.
- Conduct reconciliation between planned and actual production.
- Optimize equipment utilization and fleet requirements.
- Integrate mine plans with processing plant capacities and stockpile strategies.
Technical Services
- Heading the Technical services department, including Survey and Geology, Geotech, short and medium terms planning.
- Lead survey, geology, geotechnical, and planning teams for operational excellence.
- Oversee geological modelling and resource estimation processes.
- Ensure accuracy of survey data for mine development and production.
Validation
- Review, Approve and Sign-Off on all mining deliverables produced by project team.
- Validate mine designs, schedules, and technical reports for accuracy.
- Ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and legal standards.
- Conduct quality assurance checks on all project documentation.
- Review contractor submissions for adherence to contractual obligations.
Input to tender/procurement process and appointment of Mining Contractor
- Prepare technical specifications for tender documents.
- Take part in evaluation of contractor bids for technical and financial compliance.
- Participate in pre-bid meetings and clarify technical queries.
- Assess contractor capability, experience, and safety performance.
Management of appointed mining contractor once they have mobilised
- Oversee contractor mobilization and site establishment activities.
- Ensure compliance with safety, health, and environmental standards.
- Monitor contractor performance against agreed KPIs and schedules.
- Conduct regular site inspections and audits.
- Maintain strong communication channels for operational efficiency.
Managing the Mining Contract throughout the Life of Mine
- Monitor contract compliance across all operational phases.
- Track contractor performance against LoM objectives and KPIs.
- Manage contract amendments and scope changes effectively.
- Conduct periodic reviews of cost, productivity, and safety metrics.
- Negotiate adjustments for unforeseen operational challenges.
Minimum Qualifications, & Experience.
- Degree in Mining Engineering, Full Blasting License (FBL) and Mine Manager Certificate of Competency.
- Minimum 15+ years’ experience in mining environments.
- Knowledge in open pit mining engineering and production management including a good understanding of Load and Haul method.
