Our client in the Agriculture/ FMCG sector, is looking for a seasoned leader to take on a senior management role as their Workshop Manager.
JOB PURPOSE
To plan, organize, direct and control all workshop and fuel station operations to ensure efficient maintenance, repair, servicing and availability of the organization’s fleet and equipment, including heavy trucks, tractors, trailers, light vehicles, motorcycles and ancillary equipment. The role is responsible for maximizing fleet reliability, controlling maintenance costs, ensuring compliance with safety standards, and leading a high-performance workshop team.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Workshop Operations Management
- Lead and manage all workshop activities.
- Develop and implement preventive and predictive maintenance schedules.
- Ensure timely repair of vehicle and equipment breakdowns.
- Monitor workshop productivity and efficiency.
- Establish maintenance priorities based on operational requirements.
- Ensure availability and optimal utilization of workshop equipment.
- Fleet Maintenance Management
- Ensure fleet roadworthiness and compliance with statutory requirements.
- Monitor vehicle condition and lifecycle management.
- Coordinate major overhauls, engine rebuilds and component replacements.
- Develop maintenance policies and standard operating procedures.
- Analyse vehicle performance and recommend improvement initiatives.
- Fuel Station Management
- Oversee fuel station operations and controls.
- Ensure accuracy of fuel issues and stock reconciliation.
- Monitor fuel consumption trends and investigate variances.
- Ensure compliance with fuel handling and environmental regulations.
- Prevent fuel losses and pilferage.
- Cost Control and Budget Management
- Prepare annual workshop budgets.
- Control maintenance and repair costs.
- Monitor expenditure against approved budgets.
- Ensure economical procurement and utilization of spare parts.
- Develop cost reduction initiatives without compromising service quality.
- Stores and Inventory Management
- Maintain optimum stock levels for critical spare parts.
- Monitor inventory controls and stock accuracy.
- Reduce obsolete and slow-moving inventory.
- Ensure proper inventory recording and accountability.
- Coordinate supplier performance evaluations.
- Health, Safety and Environmental Compliance
- Ensure compliance with occupational health and safety regulations.
- Conduct regular safety inspections and risk assessments.
- Ensure workshop housekeeping standards are maintained.
- Investigate accidents and recommend corrective action.
- Promote a strong safety culture throughout the workshop.
- Leadership and People Management
- Lead, motivate and develop workshop personnel.
- Conduct performance management and coaching sessions.
- Identify staff training and development needs.
- Promote teamwork and accountability.
- Manage disciplinary and grievance procedures as required.
- Reporting and Administration
- Prepare monthly workshop performance reports.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records.
- Analyse fleet availability and reliability statistics.
- Produce management reports on KPIs and operational performance.
- Ensure accurate documentation of repairs and maintenance activities.
Qualifications & Experience
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering or related field.
- Journeyman Class 1 / Trade Test certification in Motor Mechanics, Diesel Plant Fitting or equivalent.
- Valid driver’s licence.
- Minimum 8-10 years’ experience in fleet maintenance management.
- At least 5 years in a senior supervisory or management position.
- Experience managing workshops servicing:
- Heavy commercial vehicles
- Tractors and agricultural equipment
- Trailers
- Light vehicles
- Motorcycles
- Experience in fuel management systems.
- Experience managing maintenance budgets and inventory.
