This role contributes to the implementation of the strategy for the Geology team through:
- Formulating and maintaining a Geotechnical monitoring strategy for the Mine
- Conducting slope stability analysis and Pit design recommendations
- Recommending safe Planning and working procedures to minimize the risk of slope failure, rockfalls and any other geotechnical threats to Mining personnel and equipment.
Duties and responsibilities
These include-
- Regular geotechnical inspections (pit slopes, haul roads and waste rock dumps)
- Recommending Pit slopes and waste rock dumps monitoring systems in consultation with Mine Planning Section and Mining department
- Undertaking detailed analysis on fall of ground and conduct back analysis to determine cause of failure
- Undertaking seepage mapping and any other hydrogeological tasks required for better management of groundwater related issues
- Geotechnical Pit mapping and Pit structure analysis
- Conducting geotechnical hazard identification risk assessments and monitoring rock deformations
- Geotechnical data collection, diamond core logging, sample collection, testing and interpretation
- Data validation and QA/QC with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
- Wall depressurization investigations
- Input to blast designs for stable slopes
- Conducting reviews of slope performance focusing on rock mechanics issues and reconciliation between Pit design and Pit construction
- Contractor management and supervision for geotechnical drilling
- Promote and develop the skills of subordinates through the transfer of technology and skill development through on-the-job training programs.
- Demonstrate personal commitment regarding safety and environmental and social responsibility practices.
- Ensure that agreed procedures, safeguards and controls are applied and used.
- Ensure all activities are conducted safely and in accordance with Company standards and procedures
- Ensure hazard management plans are observed.
- Keeping Statutory and internal reporting as required.
- Active participation in the Company’s SHE strategy
Key Competences
These include-
- Advanced Computer skills including experience with standard geotechnical software packages
- Detail-oriented and able to follow and maintain accurate, detailed documentation and policies
- Should demonstrate strong conceptual skills and be capable of developing lateral and practical solutions.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills a must
- Proven Contractor management and supervision for geotechnical drilling
- Demonstrable understanding of relevant applicable legislations and Mining Regulations
- Strong and demonstrable ability in planning, controlling, and organizing of resources.
- Ability to demonstrate good time management and organisational skills
- Strong oral and technical report writing skills are essential.
Person Specifications
Suitable candidates should have the following qualifications and experience-
- Tertiary qualifications in Mining Engineering and/or Geotechnical/Geological Engineering
- Experience undertaking geotechnical analysis utilising Rock Mass Classification systems, structure analysis, failure mode and slope stability analysis
- At least 4 years of relevant experience in a Mining environment
