Reports To: Head of Engineering
Location: Harare
Job Purpose
The Chief Draughtsman leads the factory’s Engineering Design Office, overseeing a team of draughtsmen and CAD/BIM technicians. This role is responsible for ensuring all technical schematics, plant modifications, machinery installations, and utility layouts (steam, HVAC, power) are executed with absolute precision, conform to international manufacturing standards, and seamlessly support the factory’s operational and expansion goals.
Key Responsibilities
- Design Office Leadership: Manage and mentor the drafting team, assign project workloads, track deliverables, and conduct performance evaluations.
- Quality Assurance & Sign-off: Review, verify, and formally sign off on all 2D technical drawings, 3D models, and Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) before they are issued to maintenance crews or external contractors.
- CapEx & Factory Expansion Projects: Partner with Project Engineers to design layouts for multi-million dollar plant upgrades, secondary processing line optimizations, and greenfield/brownfield factory expansions.
- Document Control & Digital Twin Management: Oversee the master engineering archive. Ensure the factory’s “as-built” digital models are accurately maintained, version-controlled, and instantly retrievable.
- Standardization: Establish, enforce, and update the company’s internal CAD/BIM drafting protocols, symbol standards, and safety clearance guidelines.
- Vendor & Contractor Liaison: Coordinate with external machinery OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers), architectural firms, and structural contractors to integrate external technical data into the master factory layout.
- Material & Cost Estimation: Oversee the generation of highly accurate Bills of Materials (BOMs) and technical data sheets to assist procurement in sourcing machinery components and materials.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Higher National Diploma (HND) or Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Production Technology, Architectural Drafting, or a related technical discipline.
- 8 to 10+ years of active design/drafting experience, with at least 3 years in a supervisory or lead role within a tobacco processing plant, food/beverage factory, or massive high-volume manufacturing environment.
- Software Mastery:
- Advanced, expert-level proficiency in AutoCAD (2D/3D).
- Strong mastery of 3D modeling and plant design software such as SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor, Revit, or AutoCAD Plant 3D.
- Working knowledge of Document Management Systems (DMS).
