Underground Construction Manager – Mining Sector

This is an urgent appointment and CVs required ASAP. 

This role works and reports to the Group Projects Manager to develop and construct an underground mine.  

The Construction Manager must have experience in underground mining industry. 

The main purpose of the job is to provide internal engineering services for the mining underground project. 

The job ensures the project receives engineering input and monitoring required to achieve predefined quality, safety, cost, and production targets. 

KEY RESULT AREAS AND ACTIVITIES/TASKS 

  1. DESIGN
  • Provision of drawings, specifications, calculations, and other similar engineering design outputs as may be reasonably required.
  • Participation in design and other similar meetings to develop and discuss design.
  • Engagement and collaboration with other internal and external engineers and consultants
  • Detailed review of any design documentation provided by external parties.
  • Provide engineering assistance to the group projects manager, and other members of the projects team, as required 
  1. EXECUTION
  • Resolution of on-site issues which require engineering input. Provision of instruction to contractors/installers with details required to achieve the desired installation.
  • Supervision and management of contractors/installers as required to achieve desired quality.
  • Assist the project manager and quantity surveyor in assessing contractor claims.
  • Participation in regular progress meetings with internal and external stakeholders
  • Provision of regular progress updates in written format
  • Assist in the achievement of predefined quality targets through best practice designs and through monitoring of installs for adherence to specifications and requirements.
  • Assist in the achievement of predefined schedule targets through proactive planning of upcoming tasks and monitoring of contractor progress.
  • Proactive risk management through implementation of mitigation strategies ahead of risks materializing 
  1. COST CONTROL
  • Assist the group projects manager and cost controller by monitoring project expenditure, and ensuring expenditure is carried out wisely.
  • Assist the group projects manager and cost controller through assessment of contractor claims.
  • Help ensure budgets are not exceeded by spending wisely
  1. QUALITY
  • Ensure designs produced adhere to local building code and mining standards.
  • Monitor progress on site to ensure quality achieved is as per specification/requirements. Produce detailed reports and provide advise where corrective action is required 
  1. SAFETY
  • Implement the company safety policy, procedures, and standards to minimize harm to those involved in the project.
  • Ensure associated designs produced consider safety as well as functionality.
  • Assist the company SHEQ department through monitoring, correction and enforcement of SHEQ policies 
  1. PROCUREMENT (CONTRACTORS, MATERIALS, EQUIPMENT, CONSULTANTS)
  • Development of specifications and scope of work to form part of the Request for Tender documentation.
  • Help the group projects manager, and other stakeholders, in the development of tender documentation. This is applicable to contractors, materials/equipment, and consultants.
  • Aid the group projects manager, and other stakeholders, in the assessment of tenders submitted.
  • Proactively work with the documents & materials controller to ensure the correct materials and equipment are procured timeously for the project, and adequate stock levels are maintained. 
  1. ACCOUNTABILITY
  • Overall management of construction operations relating to the project
  • Achievement of predefined project targets including safety, schedule, cost, quality
  • Minimize harm to those working on the project during the install through adoption of SHEQ policies/procedures, and those who will operate the infrastructure installed through safely design infrastructure.
  • Ensure designs and subsequent installs allow the business to maximise output, and to operate as efficiently as possible (low cost/inputs) 
  1. EDUCATION
  • University engineering degree – knowledge or electrical engineering and drawings
  • Must be computer literate, Excel, MS Word, Microsoft project.
  • Must be capable of undertaking drawings in AutoCAD or similar software systems.
  • Expertise or experience in electrical engineering would be a benefit.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft project.
