Geo – Rock Engineer – Gold Mining House

This is specialised role which reports to the Group Technical Mining Head

The main aspect of the role is to execute slope and excavation designs, become an advisor in drilling and blasting activities as well as waste rock dump management. 

KEY RESULT AREAS AND ACCOUNTABILITIES 

Slope and Excavation Designs 

  • Providing geotechnical advice in relation to mine plans, slope stability and hazard management.
  • Geotechnical assessment and input into the mine design, drill and blast and ground support.
  • Development of mine design following the industry acceptable methodology to ensure accurate & safe designs.
  • Geotechnical monitoring including design, installation & analysis of data.
  • Carrying out geotechnical project studies.
  • Developing recommendations and conducting investigations into geotechnical concerns.
  • Use of robust design parameters to ensure optimized slope designs.
  • Update the mine design using latest slope parameters to match the as built conditions.
  • Design parameter optimization using mapping data for each geotechnical domain. 

Mine Environmental Safety 

  • Close liaison with the production team to ensure the working environment & designs are in line with prevailing face conditions.
  • Enforce daily pit / excavation inspections to ascertain stability associated with working faces & give appropriate controls aligned with the stakeholders.
  • Enforcement of work stoppage in unsafe areas to minimize personnel injury & equipment damage in line with the mine procedures in conjunction with alignment with the statutory appointments. 

Input into Drilling & Blasting 

  • Appropriate analysis of blast vibrations to determine the safe attenuation distances relative to infrastructures & applicable of correct charge mass be delays.
  • Application of borehole drill data to appropriately assist in determination stability or blast domains zones. 

Waste Rock Dump Management 

  • Involvement in the compilation of the code of practice for rock dumps.
  • Coordinate risk assessments, standards, processes, procedures, monitoring of rock stability.
  • Design parameters for open pit operations.
  • Sound geotechnical data collection and modelling.
  • Structural stability monitoring of waste rock dumps and stockpiles and tailings.
  • Design suitable mining layouts and support, in accordance with Rock Engineering principles.
  • Compile progress and budget reports, compile monthly technical reports, ad hoc project reports as well as memorandums on observations.
  • Research, document and implement best practice rock engineering standards and procedures.
  • Manage internal and external relations, including the interface with external providers responsible to ensure business needs are met and employees are satisfied. 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE 

  • Degree in Geology or equivalent.
  • Master’s degree in the relevant field would be an added advantage.
  • A minimum of 5 years’ work experience in mining industry with gold/underground exposure being very critical.
