Financial Controller – Tobacco Sector – Chartered Accountant

The role supports the Head of Finance and works closely in control with the accounts department.  

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES OF THE ROLE 

  • Co-ordinate and prepare annual budgets, Board & Shareholder reports including operating and capital expenditure budgets within timeframes
  • Preparation of monthly projections using the business model.
  • Prepare and meet accounting and financial reporting goals and objectives for the department.
  • Preparation / reporting of monthly financial results in strict accordance with set deadlines.
  • Provide a monthly analysis of actual revenue and expenditure against budget with detailed explanations for variances noted.
  • Coordination of the internal and external audits and ensuring they are completed on time.
  • Update Departmental Heads with their monthly departmental financial performance variance reports.
  • Collate all relevant information to produce end of year statutory accounts within set reporting deadlines.
  • Preparation of financial reports as and when required by other stakeholders e.g., shareholders, banks.
  • Maintain a documented system of accounting policies and procedures.
  • Ensure all monthly reconciliations, including but not limited to inventory, Banks, trade debtors, grower receivables and payables are performed, reviewed and reconciling items cleared timeously
  • Ensure accuracy of the general ledger by verifying transactions per ledger accounts and ensure that all business transactions per the accounting records are reasonable, appropriate, and necessary
  • Ensure that accounts payable are paid in a timely manner / per agreed credit terms.
  • Ensure timely settlement of statutory obligations within set deadlines.
  • Enforce budgetary control and discipline by ensuring that all expenditure – CAPEX and OPEX is per the Board approved budget
  • Develop, communicate, and enforce policies and procedures to complete required financial processes and prepare records necessary to safeguard assets and provide reliable financial information.
  • Automation of manual tasks where possible and champion the ERP developments of the finance department to ensure internal controls are embedded in the ERP in line with the Financial Authority Policy

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND ATTRIBUTES 

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting from a reputable institution
  • Professional qualification – Chartered Accountant
  • Master’s degree is an added advantage
  • Five years job experience in the field of accounting or finance or similar position preferably in the agriculture sector but not essential
  • Knowledge and good application of accounting standards, procedures, and principles.
  • Ability to interpret and analyze financial data/performance.
  • Good analytical, interpersonal and communication skills required
  • Must be able to work with employees in various businesses at all levels of their respective organizations.
  • Work accurately under pressure and meet set deadlines
  • Demonstrate the aptitude or competence for assigned responsibilities
  • Demonstrate the ability to take initiative and carry out assigned tasks to completion
  • Manage time and resources well and demonstrates good organizational abilities
  • Computer literate in Microsoft Office applications, Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
