The successful Engineer is required to provide a professional maintenance engineering service in order to maximise sustainable company profitability through:

  • Developing and continually refining the most appropriate maintenance strategies and standard jobs for specific equipment types.
  • Assessing and fine-tuning the process of long-term maintenance scheduling to ensure that the developed maintenance strategies are adhered to in practice.
  • Assessing and directing the process of defect root cause analysis, in order to promote pro-active maintenance.

To accept and adhere to all aspects of the legal appointment in terms of the Works and Mines Act in terms of safe asset condition and task plans that meet safety requirements.

To perform any reasonable assignments related to this role.

Description:

  • Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement by coaching and supporting of peers and production staff, aimed at improving technical competency, teamwork and mutual support.
  • To manage the execution of planned maintenance-related levels 2 and 3 shutdown work in close co-operation with the Plant Maintenance Engineers, in order to achieve shortest job duration, safe working practises and high quality of maintenance work. If within his / her discretion, he / she can take management ownership of unplanned major corrective jobs in a similar fashion.
  • To, in co-operation with the responsible maintenance engineers, ensure that maintenance controllers / supervisors with the right skills, experience and personal profile are appointed.
  • To support the responsible plant maintenance engineers with the periodic performance appraisal of maintenance controllers / supervisors.
  • To support the responsible plant maintenance engineers with the compilation of formal development plans for maintenance controllers / supervisors, and the continuous monitoring of the development process.

Functional Role:

  • To ensure that asset technical specifications are kept up to date.
  • To investigate the desirability and feasibility of proposed asset modifications, and to approve such modifications if deemed desirable and feasible.
  • To develop capital application requests for approved modifications and / or projects.
  • Develop maintenance strategies for specific equipment types and ensure that these are thoroughly documented.
  • Model the expected results of the maintenance strategies to understand what the impact on availability, reliability and maintenance cost is going to be.
  • Ensure that standard jobs (preventive, corrective and design-out) are compiled by the maintenance team according to the maintenance strategy.
  • Support the maintenance planners, as required, with technical skills regarding root cause analysis.
  • To assess the process of failure pattern analysis and ensure that maintenance strategies are updated to improve availability and reliability, while trying to reduce lifecycle cost.
  • Periodically analyse plant lifecycle cost and operability, to make recommendations regarding the optimum replacement points.
  • Periodically assess the availability of spare rotable units in stock and make recommendations in this regard to commercial management.
  • Periodically assess stores’ service levels and make recommendations in respect of optimising stock levels of maintenance and a “production process” replacement part while maximum standardising and consolidation are achieved.
  • Assess the contents of shutdown plans to reduce unfavourable losses, without sacrificing equipment reliability and intrinsic value and integrity.

Development Role:

  • To continually develop his / her technical as well as managerial skills in order to be sufficiently equipped to stimulate continuous improvement.
  • To stimulate, in close co-operation with the plant superintendent and maintenance controller, aspects such as safety, parts, tools / maintenance equipment, suppliers, techniques and practices that will lead to improvements in equipment availability, reliability, product quality, safety and reduced cost.

Competencies:

  • Engineering degree.
  • Government Certificate of Competency.
  • General knowledge of Plant & Equipment – 5 years minimum
  • Planning & Scheduling Course Certificate
  • Solid RCM theoretical knowledge and a minimum of 5 years’ practical experience
  • Interactive management
  • Strong computer skills in:
  • Integrated Information Systems
  • MS Word, MS Excel, MS Project
  • Supervisory experience – 3 years preferable
  • Good estimating, organisational and prioritisation skills
  • Good communication skills, both written and oral
  • Good logical problem solving and analytical skills.
